Taitung’s Lijia Water Treatment Plant has made history by launching Taiwan’s first small-scale hydropower system integrated with a public water supply. By utilizing a 50-meter water pressure drop, the facility generates enough electricity to power 200 households daily.
Key Highlights
Eco-Friendly & Clean: To address public concerns regarding water safety, the Taiwan Water Corporation (TWC) ensures the system is oil-free, preventing any contamination of the drinking water.
Dual-Purpose Infrastructure: The project turns existing water resources into a green energy source, with the revenue from selling electricity back to the grid being used to upgrade water infrastructure.
Proven Stability: While hydropower often faces challenges with water pressure and supply consistency, TWC confirmed these technical hurdles have been resolved, ensuring steady power generation.
Future Outlook
Following the success at Lijia, the TWC 10th Branch Office plans to evaluate other sites with similar conditions, such as the Taian and Guanshan treatment plants. This initiative aligns with the national green energy strategy, aiming to maximize resource efficiency across the country.
"Our goal is to lead by example, showing how small-scale hydropower can be a sustainable and profitable addition to our water systems." — TWC Representative
